Dividing line between the cirques of Mafate and Cilaos, the rocky peaks of the 3 Salazes are on the ridge line between Gros Morne (3000 meters) and Grand Bénare (2900 meters). They rise to more than 2,000 metres above sea level, and you will see a breathtaking panorama as you reach the summit.
However to get there, It takes a good physical form and especially not fear the void. Some parts of the ascent are also quite technical. It is therefore necessary to call on a professional to guide you.
You will need to bring with you the following equipment: Headlamp with batteries, hiking shoes, backpack (20 liters minimum), windbreaker or rain gear(K-way), lightweight pants in addition to shorts, fleece against the cold, gloves, tee-shirt replacement, cap, sunscreen, sunglasses, food, water (1.5 liter/person).
The departure is around 4 am from the car park of the Taïbit pass in Cilaos. It is convenient to sleep in the very good lodging of the gates of the Taibit which very close to the parking lot.
After being equipped by the guide, you start with a walk of about 2 hours. You then reach at sunrise the stop that shares the circuses of Mafate and Cilaos.
When you arrive at the «Pic du Mikado», your guide will equip you with a helmet and shoulder harness. This is where the route begins. It is a round trip of about 06H on average.
We line up to walk through the thinnest part of the ridge («Tightrope Walker Ridge»). We then arrive at the foot of the rock on which are perched the three Salazes.
After climbing the rock in the void, we find ourselves at the feet of the Salazes.
We then climb the Central Salaze (optional). Then by a zip line, which we will have installed beforehand, we cross until the first Salaze.
Then 3 successive reminders (8m, 25m, 37m) allow us to regain the foot of the rock. We’ll reconnect to cross the ridge in reverse.
Finally in the descent to the parking lot, about 2 hours, you can admire your route on the ridge and also enjoy the magnificent view of the Piton des Neiges ridge!
Count on average about ten hours between departure and arrival at the car park.
