The Deepawali or Diwali is an important Tamil festival, which is an opportunity to celebrate Goddess Lakshmi, goddess of Light and Prosperity. The believers, in traditional costume, move with candles in night procession and light small terracotta lamps at home.
During the day, neighbors and friends visit each other and exchange pastries. For the public, temples are only visited outdoors.
Several cities of the island celebrate the Dipavali during October or November: Saint-André in the East, Saint-Paul and the Port in the West, in Saint-Leu and Saint-Pierre in the South.
