Untamed and unspoilt, the east of the island is a perfect reflection of the island's biodiversity.
The abundance of water in this part of the island has helped shape its incredible landscapes.
Come and admire the luxuriant nature that enhances the panoramas throughout the seasons. Take a dip in one of the many pools in the region.
Nature remains exuberant despite efforts to make the most of it (sugar cane and vanilla cultivation, etc.): waterfalls, ponds, primary forests, etc.
Discover the east of Réunion Island by visiting the Temple du Colosse in the morning. Located in the Champ Borne district of Saint-André, the Temple du Colosse is dedicated to the goddess Pandialé. It was built by Indian indentured labourers in the 19th century.
Several ceremonies dedicated to the goddess Karli are held here every year in July and May.
The first ceremony of the year, on 1 January, is dedicated to the goddess Pandialé. This ceremony consists of walking on a brazier after a 20-day vegan fast. You can learn more about her history and Tamil culture on a guided tour.
For lunch, you can visit Le Royal Indoustan restaurant in Saint-André, which specialises in Creole and Indian cuisine.
After lunch, in the early afternoon you can visit the Savanna distillery and the Bois-Rouge sugar factory: linked to the Bois-Rouge factory, one of Réunion's two sugar factories, the Savanna distillery reveals the secrets of rum production.
The presentation of the world of sugar cane farming on Réunion raises visitors' awareness of the importance of this industry to the island's economy, history and culture.
A visit to the sugar factory takes visitors deep into the fantastic world that presides over the magical metamorphosis from plant to sugar. A visit to the rum distillery introduces visitors to the meticulous production of great rums, the fermentation process and the mysteries of ageing in the Distillerie de Savanna cellars. Finally, there's a tasting session at the Tafia & Galabé boutique, where you'll discover the charm of Réunion's flavours. Then you'll head to Salazie to enjoy the sublime view from the Voile de la Mariée waterfall.
