This 18-kilometre hike will take you to one of Réunion's must-see peaks: Le Grand Bénare! At 2898m, it is the third highest peak on the island. Its name comes from the Malagasy word "Benara", meaning "where it's cold".
The start of the trail is at the Maïdo car park, and you'll follow the "Grand Bord" path throughout the hike, which offers magnificent views of the Mafate cirque! All along the way, you'll be able to contemplate the jagged landscapes for which Mafate is famous.
Once you reach the summit, after a long but gradual climb, you'll be able to take in the panoramic view of the cirque of Cilaos to your right and the cirque of Mafate to your left! To make the most of it, we strongly advise you to set off very early so as to reach the summit before the clouds form on the walls of the ramparts.
The return journey takes the same route, or the Glacière path, which can be taken at the first crossroads, and the descent may seem a little long.
