This hike is the easiest but longest way to reach the isolated islet of Roche Plate. The landscape of pebbles as far as the eye can see may bore lovers of forests or vast panoramas. The route begins on a grey, dusty road, which is best travelled on a Sunday, as during the week the incessant to-and-fro of the lorries transporting the pebbles to the crusher fills your ears with noise and the air with dust, despite the passing of a watering truck. It is therefore advisable to take the route that crosses Îlet Delbon, on the left bank, starting from the town. The width of the valley in places and the thickness of the pebbles give an idea of the millennia of erosion and water work. This route can also be taken by 4x4 for guests of the gîtes who are less fond of walking than of solitude.
Easy and not very attractive, this hike nevertheless gives you the opportunity to get to know the Rivière des Remparts valley and a lost islet somewhere other than Mafate. If you want to visit Roche Plate without walking and stay there, you can be transported by 4X4 by contacting one of the gîtes.
